September 15 – A Day to Honor our POWs and MIAs

It is a day for Americans to remember the sacrifices and services of the men and women who were prisoners of war or missing in action, and a day to hope for their safe return. The POW/MIA Accounting Agency reports that more than 83,000 Americans are still unaccounted for since World War II.

While not a federal holiday, it is a national day of observance. July 18, 1979 was the first official commemoration of POW/MIA Remembrance Day. Over the next few years the date changed throughout the year.  It wasn’t until 1986 that the National League of Families proposed that the third Friday in September be designated each year as the day to recognize the POW/MIAs.

On this special day, Americans take a moment to remember those who were POWs and those who did not return home. In addition military bases fly the official POW/MIA flag, so Americans will never forget those who were captured during conflicts as well as those who were missing in action. Veterans hold rallies in many states, and special ceremonies are held at war memorials and museums throughout the country.

The National League of Families POW/MIA flag was designed by Newt Heisley. National POW/MIA Recognition Day is one of only six days where the POW/MIA flag can be flown. The remaining holidays are Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Armed Forces Day, Flag Day and Independence Day. The flag can be displayed at the White House, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Korean Memorial, the Capitol, national cemeteries, government buildings and military installations.
