Honoring Korean War Veterans

In July of 1998, 45 years after signing the treaty that ended the Korean War, President Clinton proclaimed July 27 National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day. This day honors those who served in Korea and those who lost their lives during the war. Since then Veterans have celebrated this day across the country with memorial services and by laying wreaths at the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC and other monuments throughout our Nation.

Prior to the end of World War II, Korea was controlled by Japan. In August 1945, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan and liberated Korea north of the 38th parallel.  Because of the Cold War between the Soviets and the US, Korea was split into two regions, with neither accepting the border.

The Korean War, which took place from June 25, 1950 – July 27, 1953, began when North Korea, which was supported by both the Soviet Union and China, invaded South Korea. The UN called for a ceasefire, and two days later they adopted a resolution to send forces to South Korea.

During the war, Seoul changed hands four times. The armistice was signed on July 27, 1953. The Korean Demilitarized Zone was created, separating North and South Korea. Although the fighting ended, no peace treaty was ever signed.
