Ways to Serve Our Military Vets

People interested in volunteering their time and who may want to help veterans of the United States military have many different options from which to choose. The nature of the work can depend upon the amount of time that is available as well as the type of work desired.
Here are some ideas that can give most anyone an opportunity to give back to those that have given so much for us.

  • Volunteer at the local VA Hospital
Any hospital needs the help of volunteers and the Veteran’s Affairs hospital near you is no different. You may be able to help at a reception desk, deliver flowers to patient rooms, read to or visit with patients and family members and more. You can choose to help during the weekday or weekend as your schedule allows.

  • Drive Disabled Vets
Many veterans are unable to drive due to the nature of their disabilities. Working through local agencies, you can volunteer to drive veterans to needed appointments or on errands that help facilitate their daily living.

  • Give to a Local Homeless Veterans Shelter
Too many military veterans are homeless and hungry and rely on local shelters and soup kitchens for meals. Donating food, clothing, personal care or bedding items is a great way to help these people receive the nutrition they need and have a safe place to sleep.

  • Say Thank You
When you see a person with a veteran’s sticker on a car bumper or some other designation that identifies him or her as a veteran, wave or say thank you. An impromptu gesture like that can go a long way toward brightening a vet’s day.

  • Give a Gift
Whether or a special occasion or just because, consider giving a veteran that you know a special commemorative gift. Some options include watches, rings, bomber jackets or plates.

No matter which approach you take, when you give of yourself to appreciate the effort made by a veteran, you will touch the heart of someone in a deep way. In addition, it is known that by giving to others, you can also improve your own day and life.
