Students Learn the About Individual History: Show Personal Appreciation to Vietnam Veterans

Vietnam War veterans were arguably given the worst homecoming out of all of the military personnel that served in wars since the mid-19th century.  Thankfully, times have changed.  Today, most United States citizens appreciate the men and women that serve in the United States Armed Forces.  However, the Vietnam War era was a bleak time for veterans.  Veterans returned home to be routinely harassed by an unhappy public.  Many Vietnam veterans fought in Vietnam, and then they fought a war at home.  Needless to say, the Vietnam War is remembered as bittersweet for numerous veterans.

Exploring Personal History in High School

Numerous teenage students taught by Tom Clarke at Lake Central High School learned the meaning of sacrifice after completing an assignment.  The students had to compile a complete profile of a veteran and learn about the individual outside of the context of the veteran’s wartime accomplishments.  The students had to learn about the whole person, not just the soldier.

Vietnam War Veterans Will Not Be Around Forever

Keep the personal aspect of Vietnam War history alive. Many veterans do not find it easy to talk about their tenure during the Vietnam War era. The right Vietnam War gifts can give the right message without being too obtrusive.  Some personal Vietnam War gifts include the following listed below:

  • Commemorative Vietnam War veteran knives
  • Personalized veteran rings
  • Customized United States military watches

Revisit History a Better Way

All Vietnam veterans experienced the war differently. It is important to recognize that a mechanic and a soldier on the front lines could both still have scars from the war. Similarly, a mechanic and a soldier on the front lines could both currently remember friends in the armed forces rather than traumatic wartime events.  Learn about history from a Vietnam War veteran by looking at the entire person, similar to the assignment given to Tom Clark’s high school students.

Further show your appreciation to the mechanic, the foot soldier, the pilot, and the medic with a thoughtful Vietnam War gift.
