United States Armed Forces Need to Share Their Story Using Commemorative Items
If you are a veteran of any branch of the United States armed forces, you have a rich story to tell. One thing you could consider doing is to put your memories together and create a display or presentation that you can give to a local community organization, such as a municipal library, or school. Doing this would allow you to capture many aspects of your time in service and educate others about what it is really like.
Here are some ideas of what you could include in your veteran’s memory box:
-
Photos
These could be of your base, place of deployment, your fellow soldiers and more. You could include captions that add great detail to the images that bring them to life to viewers. -
Videos
Today’s technology makes it easy to create video files that can be sharable. The ability to marry images and sound in live action is a fabulous way to really illustrate what a particular event was like. -
Letters
Sharing letters to and from family members can help others to more deeply understand the experience of being away from loved ones during difficult and often dangerous situations. This may allow non-veterans to better appreciate your sacrifices. -
Military Memorabilia
Inclusion of your combat boots, dog tags, military hats, arms (without ammunition, of course) and other items are commonly of interest to people interested in learning more about the experience. -
Maps of Foreign Areas
Outlining a foreign map at a local level with detailed notations about where you were deployed and where other activities took place gives a better perspective of events. -
Special Commemorative Items
Perhaps you have a special military service honor ribbon ring or a military chalice of honor that commemorates your participation in a certain war. If so, these items can add a lot of interest to your display.
The more that you and other veterans share the richness and depth of your military experiences with civilians, the better able the public will be to appreciate your efforts. With so much to share, now is the time for you to find ways to do just that.
