Train a Service Dog to Help a Veteran

If you are looking for different ways that you can help a veteran of the United States armed forces, you could consider training a service dog. Many U.S. veterans become disabled as a result of their time in active duty. Depending upon the nature of their disabilities, assistance from service dogs may be beneficial.
Following are some types of assistance that may be needed by a vet that a properly trained service or working dog can provide.
• Sight or visual assistance
For people who are either completely blind or have limited vision, a dog can guide them when walking or maneuvering around home or in public places.
• Hearing assistance
A dog can be trained to understand and listen for a person’s name or certain commands so that it is able to help a disabled person when needed.
• Psychiatric service assistance
For veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder, a dog with the right training can perform certain tasks to help keep certain stresses at a level that is supportable by the person, to keep symptoms associated with PTSD in balance.
• Wheelchair assistance
Wheelchair-bound vets can benefit from a dog that can pick up items that have been dropped or bring a phone to them and more. Service dogs can also open or close doors, making entering or exiting a room easier for the person in the wheelchair.
• Brace or mobility support
Many veterans have problems with balance and a service dog can provide the necessary support to keep a person stable while walking. This may be needed at home or in public locations as well.
People that commit their time and energy to raising and training service dogs find that their work is a wonderful way to give back to the veterans who have given so much toward the service of our country. Another great way to thank the vet is to provide a lovely military honor gift, such as a wallet or watch to him or her along with the dog, once trained. This combination of a faithful and helpful companion along with a forever memento of gratitude is sure to make any veteran proud.
