Top Ways For Civilians to Take Pride in American Armed Forces

Many civilians only understand what it is like to serve in the armed forces from popular culture and news media.  It is difficult for Americans with little to no military background to understand what it is like for veterans and their loved ones.  Imaging what it would be like to leave your life and loved ones behind without certainty that you will return is almost impossible.  Similarly, imagining what it would be like to say goodbye to a loved one that went to war would also be difficult to fathom.

Show Your Pride For American Veterans

Civilians can do their part to help support veterans that served in the United States Armed Forces.  Listed below are a few ideas for everyday civilians:

  • Use your talents and your spare time wisely.  Raise money for various not-for-profit organizations by selling homemade quilts, selling homemade wood furniture, organizing silent auctions, and raising awareness about the value of services offered.  Find others in the community to help participate in raising funds and awareness.
  • Get together with others in order to make a larger impact.  Form a new community or get your neighborhood involved in different veteran appreciation initiatives.  You can take turns providing dinner for veterans and their families; you can take turns providing free childcare for a date night; or you can give a commemorative ring as a token of your appreciation as a community.
  • Show your support by investing in meaningful gifts years after veterans come home.  Commemorative gifts can show that you still remember service, and you still are appreciative.

Get Creative and Make a Splash in Your Community

Personal appreciation is a must. However, appreciation and support from an entire community is even better.  Skip prime time television, and dedicate your time to supporting veterans.  You do not have to have a military background.  In fact, admitting that you don’t understand what it is like to be a military family or a veteran can be very helpful.

Support your country by gaining more support for those in your community.  Support American troops as a civilian by investing your time and utilizing your talents.
