Special Winter Days to Thank a Vet

The winter months can start off fast and furious with the Christmas and New Year’s holidays and then drone on through the sometimes dark and cold months of January and February. You can find ways to brighten the day of a veteran all winter long by capitalizing on some fun days set aside with special designations.

Search out your own special ideas or try these ones that are some of our favorites.

  • December 3—National Disability Day

Many veterans become disabled due to injuries that they sustained while in active duty. Take the time this year to volunteer and give your energies to helping people in your community with disabilities—you just never know how many of them are likely to be veterans as well!

  • December 18—National Bake Cookies Day

Bake your favorite cookies—holiday or otherwise—and take a tray to the personnel at your local Veteran’s Administration hospital. Thanking the people who serve and treat our nation’s veterans is a great way to support vets.

  • January 14— National Organize Your Home Day

If you know a veteran who needs help around the home, today is a great day to offer your help. You can assist with regular daily needs or that deep annual cleaning and organizing.

  • January 15—National Hat Day

Buy a fun new hat for that special vet in your life. It might even be something that goes well with some other military garb, such as a U.S. bomber jacket, that he loves to wear.

  • February 17—National Random Acts of Kindness Day

Spend a few hours at a VA hospital near you and just visit with veterans and their families. The kind ear of another person is always appreciated by those in the hospital.

  • February 28—National Floral Design Day

Treat a veteran to some flowers today and really brighten his or her day!

Small gifts such as watches, plates, pins and more can also be nice ways to show a veteran that you are aware of his or her sacrifices and that you appreciate them indeed. The smile that you will see in return will be all the thanks you will need.
