Respect Comes in Many Forms

When we talk about supporting our troops, what does that really mean? To some people, support is shown in the form of a sticker with a yellow ribbon or a banner expressing this sentiment. To others, support is talking about the value of military service and the importance of caring for veterans and their families. Other people feel that supporting our troops means sacrificing personal time and energy to correspond with deployed service members. Going to parades and attending community memorial services are other ways that people might choose to show their support. Clearly, there are many ways that a person might choose to support our troops. Raising awareness of the need to respect and honor those who have served is an important task and can be accomplished in all kinds of positive and worthwhile ways.

Visible Signs of Support and Respect

Simply adding a bumper sticker to your car or pinning a yellow ribbon to your lapel does not seem like very much. However, these small signs of support can actually have a big impact so long as they are performed mindfully and with the proper attitude.

There is a wide range of items to choose from if you wish to show your respect for the troops in this way. Here are a few ways you can use them:

  • Choose lapel pins, tie tacks, cuff links, jewelry charms, and other personal items with a patriotic theme
  • Display a sign or small banner on your front door, porch, or main window
  • Select a supportive bumper sticker for your vehicle, motorcycle, or bicycle
  • Keep a picture, memento, or inspirational item in your office workspace
  • Purchase a flag that can be displayed on patriotic holidays

No matter what action you choose to take, make sure that the manner you choose to express your support is tasteful. A poorly thought-out show of support will not have the positive impact that it has the potential to have.

Making Support a Topic of Conversation

Talking about the realities faced by the men and women who are participating in active military duty can be surprisingly complicated. People sometimes confuse respect for the choice to serve with a particular political agenda. Every person who feels drawn to serve by making a personal sacrifice for the good of the country deserves respectful support. This simple truth has no political overtones and advances no specific party line.

You can also have important conversations with your legislators and representatives. Is there a piece of legislation intended to help veterans and their family members? Make sure you express support for these measures. Calling, emailing, and writing lawmakers in favor of these measures is an excellent way of showing support for active military service members and for veterans.

Building Community Spirit Through Participation

Parades and other civic observances that take place on patriotic holidays offer an easy way for everyone to show their support of active service members, veterans, and the people who love them. These observances are frequently held on Independence Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Patriot Day.

Once you think about it, you will certainly discover lots of ways to show your support and respect for the men and women who serve.
