Remember Vets All Autumn Long


November 11 is Veteran’s Day and certainly this is a day worthy of effort and commemoration. However, do not let this be the only day that you set aside a few moments to recognize all that you have thanks to our country’s large pool of military veterans. Make your commitment this year to acknowledge vets more regularly and use some of the following fun dates to make that happen.

  • September 11—National Day of Service and Remembrance
    There is no greater form of service to one’s country than to give of one’s self in the armed forces. It is the ultimate selfless act and deserving of your time to stop and give thanks to so many people who have given of themselves in this way.
  • September 21National POW/MIA Recognition Day
    Many U.S. veterans experienced time as prisoners of war or were even listed as missing in action for some period of time. Others may have never been found after being noted as missing. Say a special prayer or intention for these people and their families today.
  • September 28—National Public Lands Day
    Without the work of our armed forces, we would not have the treasure of public lands to appreciate. Volunteer today to help clean up a local, state or national park as a way of saying thanks.
  • October 12—National Free Thought Day
    Veterans have fought to preserve your right to free thought and speech through many wars. This year, share a through on your favorite social media platform thanking veterans for allowing you such freedoms.
  • October 26—National Day of the Deployed
    Take a meal to the family of a deployed serviceperson today. Giving support for military personnel when active can make their future transition to veteran status much easier as they will know that their efforts are appreciated.

Of course, Veteran’s Day on November 11 should get your focus, too. If you have attended special events in the past, this year try volunteering to help at them and get even more involved. You could also give a special vet a unique commemorative gift as a more personal way of thanking him for his years of service.
