Little Ways to Keep Patriotism Alive in Your Life

Patriotism is an admirable value that connects people living today with generations of brave individuals that came before. Though patriotism can be simply defined as a feeling of loyalty to one’s country, to many Americans patriotism is more than just a feeling. Patriotism also encompasses the actions that are undertaken as an expression of that feeling. This means that patriotism has taken many different forms and will no doubt find all kinds of new expressions over the years.

Showing patriotism is a way of displaying pride in your national identity and an allegiance with the sacrifice that others have made for our country. There are many different ways that you can make showing patriotism part of your daily life. Not only will you be celebrating this value and the many things it means privately, you will be keeping its spirit alive in the minds of others. You can be a positive influence on your family, friends, coworkers, and on your whole community.

Look for Patriotic Themed Accessories

Watches, lapel pins, and medallions are just a few of the wardrobe accessories people love to wear on a daily basis. Because these items see such frequent use, they can be used to display the values that are most important to you. For instance, people active in their faith community might wear a medallion with a religious theme to stay mindful of the principles they hold dear. People who have served in a branch of the armed services might choose to wear a watch with an emblem that commemorates their service.

Select a version of your favorite accessory with a patriotic theme. Bald eagles, American flags, and military insignia are just a few of the inspiring images you can find on watches, medallions, rings, cufflinks, lapel pins, and more. These handsome accessories actually make great gifts, too. They are ideal for giving on all kinds of occasions:

  • Birthdays
  • Christmas
  • Coming home from military service
  • Retirement
  • Promotion
  • College graduation
  • Marriage or engagement
  • Starting a family

Plan a Special Celebration

Though you can enjoy feeling patriotic on any day of the year, there are a few special days that deserve a little extra consideration. Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and the National Day of Service and Remembrance are some of the holidays set aside to honor the sacrifice of those who have served and those who still serve today. Though these days are popularly celebrated with big department store sales and other promotional events, you can keep the true spirit of the holidays alive in your heart by planning your own observances.

If your municipality is holding a parade, consider attending. Many veterans participate in these processions. This is a great opportunity to shake hands with a vet and personally thank them for their service. Municipalities often organize memorial services at cemeteries or war monuments. Consider attending these as well. Simply listening to the stories that people have to tell about their time serving or their experiences on the home front can really make you reflect on the importance of patriotism.

Inspiration Every Day

Keeping a reminder of patriotism close at hand helps you stay in touch with this important value. Whether your touchstone is a watch or a family photograph, you can always find inspiration close at hand.
