How to Keep Your Relationship Strong during Deployment

If you are serving the armed forces the deployment might not be an alien term for you as veterans are usually posted to areas outside their homeland to provide their services there. Your family life suffers a lot as the entire family sacrifices for the cause of the nation when you are being deployed as your spouse has to live without a partner, your children have to live without a parent and your parents have to live without a child. This sense of departure can be lessened if you tend to keep your relationship strong by following simple steps. A relationship between two people suffers the most during long distance periods because your children have the other parent or parents have the other children but your significant other only has you.

If you don’t want physical distance to take shape of emotional distance, then here are few easy steps to help you keep your relationship strong:

  1. Take Time out to Talk about it Beforehand

You are informed beforehand that you will be deployed to a certain area in a specific number of days so that you can make up your mind. However, it is not only you who needs to make up your mind but you also have to take your other half into confidence as well. You have to talk about it in detail with each other that how you plan to manage everything. You need to discuss how you need to cope with the distance and not let it disturb your love life.

  2. Plan the Options for Communication

You need to explore various options available for communication like phone calls, emails, Skype or post, which will be available in the area you are being sent to. You also need to discuss which one will help you two to feel closer and be easy for both of you. It is also ideal to check if you two will be living in different time zones, then which time will be good enough for both of you.

  3. Tell Your Spouse to become more Social

You are on a mission and you have a lot of responsibilities on you which keep you busy all the time so it is possible your spouse feels bored and left out. To help your significant others out, tell them to be more socially active. They can interact with other military spouses, go out with friends or participate in some welfare organization. This will help keep them busy and active so they can understand that you might be occupied and insecurities stay out of your relationship forever.

  4. Share Happenings of Daily Life With Each Other

It is important to tell each other you miss being together but it is more significant to discuss details of one’s everyday routine with your spouse and encourage your better half to do the same. This creates a sense of togetherness and you feel you are a part of each other’s daily lives so you don’t feel left out or forgotten.
